Description

oil painting: 3ft x 4ft

The royalmaternity figure nursing a divine child is not an icon reserved for the Christian Mary and Jesus. This painting functions to critique the parallels found in Egyptian cosmology to Judeo-Christian religion. Isis and Horus are arranged in place of Raphael Sanzino’s Madonna and Child, and in order to express their new identities, signifiers are in place to allow them to be recognizable as the Egyptian gods. Isis has utters and the horns of Hathor in association to her cow goddess identity, and Horus has the head of a falcon. European beauty standards are imposed on Isis, her skin is pale, neck elongated and her features are slender. Naturalism evolved to become a greater measuringstick determining art value, these deities are painted out of context compared to how we are accustomed to seeing them in Egyptian wall paintings, in twisted perspective.

I don't understand how Horus was anything like Jesus. He was the son of the goddess Isis and the god Osiris. In fact, if anything Osiris was more like Jesus, given that he was killed and resurrected.
